Gillette Cup Monday 10th March 2014

Just a quick wrap on the two games today which made up the Northern Districts ‘co ed’ finals of the Gillette Cup (20 / 20 stage) held in Hamilton today.

Firstly versus St Johns College (Hamilton).

Sent in to bat Mitchell Fairweather and Jack Preston started incredibly with an opening partnership of 71 (in just 7 overs!)

Jack fell on 37 and Mitch eventually on 56. Bill Burnett also had a strong innings (34 not out). We finished our 20 overs with 173.

Our bowling attack saw St Johns lose 4 wickets quickly in the first 5 overs for just 29 and it all looked like plain sailing, however some stiff middle order resistance got us all a little anxious,

until we finally got their two big hitters out and quickly mopped up the rest. Bill Burnett was our best bowler taking 3 for 23.

St Johns posted 150 all out in the 18^th over, and we progressed to today’s final.

The final was against Strathallan from Karaka. Again we were put into bat. In a slower start we lost two early wickets before hitting our stride.

Mitch Fairweather again featured with a fine knock of 40, with Patrick Davenport contributing a quick 65 not out and good cameos from Bill Burnett (25), Tom Rutherford (21) and Daniel Price (27 not out) we  

reached a very strong 201 for 5 off our 20 overs.

With assurances that they knew a score of this size was not insurmountable and that heads were in the right spaces the boys went out to defend this large score.

Taking an early wicket unfortunately was our undoing. Their # 3 batsman (Simon Lal) came to the crease and commenced a demolition of our bowling attack, hitting 10 sixes and 8 fours he batted right through the rest of the innings

and with moderate support from his team mates Strathallan surpassed our total for the loss of just 4 wickets in 18 overs !. 405 runs scored in 40 overs …. Stunning to watch but gut wrenching at the same time.

Down hearted and with some emotion the BC boys came off the field totally exhausted (physically and mentally) only to learn that we had in fact qualified for the next stage of the Gillette Cup thanks to being the top qualifying co ed school from the BOP.

So on 24^th March we join Tauranga Boys, Hamilton Boys, St Peters, Whangerei Boys, Strathallan (and a couple of others) for a 4 day 50 over tournament, the winner progressing to the National final’s later in the year.

A huge step for Bethlehem College Cricket, being the first time in the Colleges history that we have reached this stage.

A Date For Your Diary

Sports photos for cricket have been scheduled for Wednesday 12 March.
The school will provide a list of times in due course.

BC 1st XI Vs TBC 15/2/14

After a long summer break the 1^st XI were eager to start the system in a positive fashion and that they did.

Winning the toss, BC elected to bat sending the Tauranga Boys 3^rd XI into the field under cloudless blue skies at Nicholson Field.

A strong opening partnership between Jack Preston and Daniel Price saw the scoreboard tick over nicely until Preston lost his wicket on 20.

Bill Burnett and Price continued the strong start with both producing fine half centuries before Burnett fell on 56.

Price in particular confirmed the promise that saw this young man promoted to the 1^st XI as a Yr 9, hitting some classy  shots before falling on 82.

Mitch Fairweather and Tom Rutherford both provided fine cameos of 27 and 24 as did Luke Bryenton (18 Not out).

BC finished with a very credible 264 for 6.

The young TBC side were up against some determined and accurate bowling and at 40 for 5 off 17 overs it looked like an early finish was imminent.

It was not to be and whilst the BC score was never threatened they showed some resilience batting through the 45 overs and reaching 127 for 8.

Games don’t take all day…. just a couple of hours on a Saturday morning !

BC 1st XI into the Final Baywide Competition

In the most unlikely of wins, Bethlehem College 1^st XI has progressed through to the final of the Baywide 1^st XI competition.

Playing against unbeaten Otumoetai, we lost the toss and were put in to bat.

In a slow, but steady opening partnership, Matt Davis (27) and Dylan Ramohitaj (13) got through to the 17^th over unbeaten before Ramohitaj fell.

With a further 3 wickets falling in quick succession a partnership of sorts developed between Bill Burnett (15) and Patrick Davenport (20) taking the score through to 91 off 28 overs.

The remaining wickets fell quickly from there leaving Otumoetai with a meagre 114 to better.

Undeterred, Bethlehem coach, Bryce Fairweather, encouraged the lads to make something special happen (“just 9 good balls”) and happen it did.

Otumoetai started well and looked in control until in the 8^th over Ryan Poppe threw a spectacular direct hit to run out one opener.

Then in the 9^th over Bill Burnett produced a blinder taking 3 wickets (including the ‘inform’ Vaughan Wilson for a golden duck, Christian MacDonald, 0, and Cam Ball, 0).

The Otumoetai spirit seemed broken at 18 for 4 , however some determined tail end batting (Nathan Wilson, 20 & Johnny Hill, 15) did see them put up a bit of a fight, however with Bill Burnett on fire and another superb run out, the Bethlehem side had them all out in the 29^th over for 78. Bill Burnett finished with an incredible, and career best, 6 wickets for 12 off 8.5 overs.

We now take on Aquinas in the final next Saturday up at Aquinas.

BC 1st XI vs Otumoetai Saturday 19th October 2013

Game Report

In an early start to the Term 4 cricket season, BC were up against old foes Otumoetai.

Winning the toss and electing to bat, BC were nailed down by some accurate fast bowling by their openers.

An early wicket didn’t help matters and at the 10th over we had a paltry 19 runs on the board. Another wicket in the 11^th, saw Paddy Davenport come to the crease and with a ‘quick fire’ 40, aided by a nicely compiled 29 by Luke Bryenton. With a determined 17 from opener Dylan Ramohitaj and quick cameos from Ryan Poppe and Tom Rutherford, we managed to reach a total of 146 in the 40^th over.

Otumoetai were relatively untroubled in reaching this score, with a loss of just 3 wickets, all to the bowling of Dylan Wadsworth (3 for 20).

Julian Bradley on 39 and Vaughan Wilson with an unbeaten 58 were our undoing.

1^st game nerves…. Lets hope so !
