Gillette Cup 2014 Report

Thought I’d give you an update on how last week’s Gillette Cup tournament went.

These were all 50 over games played in dry sunny conditions.

The pitches would be considered highly average and some of the out fields made life for a fielder ‘interesting’.

As you will see we lost 3 of 4 games but it was a huge learning curve for the lads and for those who are going to press on with cricket, both at school and in the club

scene, it should prove very valuable (preservation of wicket against top notch consistant bowling being the biggest learner).

1^st up we played St Pauls Collegiate.

Fielding first we had them struggling at 17 for 2 before a strong stand by their middle order (1 of whom went on to be player of the tourney) saw them get through to 139 for 4 in the 35^th over.

Some very tidy bowling saw us restrict the expected final onslaught and they finished on 195 in the 48^th over.

Dylan Wadsworth had credible 3 for 41 with 3 other bowlers (Ramohitaj, Davenport and Bryenton taking 2 for 25’s)

Batting was our undoing and having got to 29 without loss after 8 overs St Pauls were concerned, they needn’t have worried, as from there we capitulated to some fine bowling and fielding and we were all out for a mere 57.

Some very dejected boys left in the van that evening.

Day 2 saw us take on Whangerei Boys High.

They batted first and got through to a healthy 71 before losing a wicket and then a quick 3 fell in the 26 – 28th over period with the score in the early 100’s.

A regroup saw them get to 200 before 4 wickets in the last two overs saw us restrict them to a 218 total.

Dylan Wadsworth again featured with an awesome 5 for 41

Bill Burnett took 3 for 45.

So could we handle the inconsistencies of these grass wickets today ?.

Unfortunately not, losing a steady stream of wickets in the first 15 overs saw us get through to 58 for 4.

We had a glimmer of hope with Patrick Davenport playing some strong strokes (albeit with a broken finger sustained

attempting a sharp chance in the field) however when he fell with our top score of 23, things unravelled again and we were bowled, all out for 109 !

A strong chance gone begging and again boys left rueing the missed opportunity.

Wednesday saw us face off against Gisborne Boys High.

Win this and we take on Tauranga Boys in the playoff for 5^th / 6^th !.

Unfortunately we lost the toss and they elected to bat. In a display of field placement, bowling and fielding that we had not seen before the

team held GBHS to just 133, Bill Burnett taking a credible 3 for 33. Confidence was high but short lived with quick and constant wickets falling.

We were all out for 82, with Patrick Davenport again highest scoring with 23.

We went on to win on Thursday against Strathallan in a very nail biting game.

Our boys again crumbled batting and were all out for 113.

Again the top score was just 23 this time coming from Bill Burnett

The other school cruised to 70 for 2 and then lost a couple more but pushed thru to 101 for 4.

So with just 14 runs to win our heads were down and they were crowing about the expected win.

A wicket at 101 and then 4 wickets on 102 saw us very very animated in the field and when we took the last on 106 you can imagine the scene.

Dylan Ramohitaj finished with bowling figures of a staggering 6 for just 10 runs off just 6.3 overs. Stunning !!

A good trip over the Kaimai's compared to what I was anticipating !

Many thanks to the committee and school for the support shown to the team.

The accommodation was superb, and logistics ran smoothly. The team gelled well and got to bed by 9.30 and settled by 10 ish)

There are a number of younger players in the mix who will undoubtedly do Bethlehem College Cricket proud over the next few years. We will watch with interest.

Gillette Cup Monday 10th March 2014

Just a quick wrap on the two games today which made up the Northern Districts ‘co ed’ finals of the Gillette Cup (20 / 20 stage) held in Hamilton today.

Firstly versus St Johns College (Hamilton).

Sent in to bat Mitchell Fairweather and Jack Preston started incredibly with an opening partnership of 71 (in just 7 overs!)

Jack fell on 37 and Mitch eventually on 56. Bill Burnett also had a strong innings (34 not out). We finished our 20 overs with 173.

Our bowling attack saw St Johns lose 4 wickets quickly in the first 5 overs for just 29 and it all looked like plain sailing, however some stiff middle order resistance got us all a little anxious,

until we finally got their two big hitters out and quickly mopped up the rest. Bill Burnett was our best bowler taking 3 for 23.

St Johns posted 150 all out in the 18^th over, and we progressed to today’s final.

The final was against Strathallan from Karaka. Again we were put into bat. In a slower start we lost two early wickets before hitting our stride.

Mitch Fairweather again featured with a fine knock of 40, with Patrick Davenport contributing a quick 65 not out and good cameos from Bill Burnett (25), Tom Rutherford (21) and Daniel Price (27 not out) we  

reached a very strong 201 for 5 off our 20 overs.

With assurances that they knew a score of this size was not insurmountable and that heads were in the right spaces the boys went out to defend this large score.

Taking an early wicket unfortunately was our undoing. Their # 3 batsman (Simon Lal) came to the crease and commenced a demolition of our bowling attack, hitting 10 sixes and 8 fours he batted right through the rest of the innings

and with moderate support from his team mates Strathallan surpassed our total for the loss of just 4 wickets in 18 overs !. 405 runs scored in 40 overs …. Stunning to watch but gut wrenching at the same time.

Down hearted and with some emotion the BC boys came off the field totally exhausted (physically and mentally) only to learn that we had in fact qualified for the next stage of the Gillette Cup thanks to being the top qualifying co ed school from the BOP.

So on 24^th March we join Tauranga Boys, Hamilton Boys, St Peters, Whangerei Boys, Strathallan (and a couple of others) for a 4 day 50 over tournament, the winner progressing to the National final’s later in the year.

A huge step for Bethlehem College Cricket, being the first time in the Colleges history that we have reached this stage.

BC 1st XI Vs TBC 15/2/14

After a long summer break the 1^st XI were eager to start the system in a positive fashion and that they did.

Winning the toss, BC elected to bat sending the Tauranga Boys 3^rd XI into the field under cloudless blue skies at Nicholson Field.

A strong opening partnership between Jack Preston and Daniel Price saw the scoreboard tick over nicely until Preston lost his wicket on 20.

Bill Burnett and Price continued the strong start with both producing fine half centuries before Burnett fell on 56.

Price in particular confirmed the promise that saw this young man promoted to the 1^st XI as a Yr 9, hitting some classy  shots before falling on 82.

Mitch Fairweather and Tom Rutherford both provided fine cameos of 27 and 24 as did Luke Bryenton (18 Not out).

BC finished with a very credible 264 for 6.

The young TBC side were up against some determined and accurate bowling and at 40 for 5 off 17 overs it looked like an early finish was imminent.

It was not to be and whilst the BC score was never threatened they showed some resilience batting through the 45 overs and reaching 127 for 8.

BC 1st XI into the Final Baywide Competition

In the most unlikely of wins, Bethlehem College 1^st XI has progressed through to the final of the Baywide 1^st XI competition.

Playing against unbeaten Otumoetai, we lost the toss and were put in to bat.

In a slow, but steady opening partnership, Matt Davis (27) and Dylan Ramohitaj (13) got through to the 17^th over unbeaten before Ramohitaj fell.

With a further 3 wickets falling in quick succession a partnership of sorts developed between Bill Burnett (15) and Patrick Davenport (20) taking the score through to 91 off 28 overs.

The remaining wickets fell quickly from there leaving Otumoetai with a meagre 114 to better.

Undeterred, Bethlehem coach, Bryce Fairweather, encouraged the lads to make something special happen (“just 9 good balls”) and happen it did.

Otumoetai started well and looked in control until in the 8^th over Ryan Poppe threw a spectacular direct hit to run out one opener.

Then in the 9^th over Bill Burnett produced a blinder taking 3 wickets (including the ‘inform’ Vaughan Wilson for a golden duck, Christian MacDonald, 0, and Cam Ball, 0).

The Otumoetai spirit seemed broken at 18 for 4 , however some determined tail end batting (Nathan Wilson, 20 & Johnny Hill, 15) did see them put up a bit of a fight, however with Bill Burnett on fire and another superb run out, the Bethlehem side had them all out in the 29^th over for 78. Bill Burnett finished with an incredible, and career best, 6 wickets for 12 off 8.5 overs.

We now take on Aquinas in the final next Saturday up at Aquinas.

BC 1st XI vs Otumoetai Saturday 19th October 2013

Game Report

In an early start to the Term 4 cricket season, BC were up against old foes Otumoetai.

Winning the toss and electing to bat, BC were nailed down by some accurate fast bowling by their openers.

An early wicket didn’t help matters and at the 10th over we had a paltry 19 runs on the board. Another wicket in the 11^th, saw Paddy Davenport come to the crease and with a ‘quick fire’ 40, aided by a nicely compiled 29 by Luke Bryenton. With a determined 17 from opener Dylan Ramohitaj and quick cameos from Ryan Poppe and Tom Rutherford, we managed to reach a total of 146 in the 40^th over.

Otumoetai were relatively untroubled in reaching this score, with a loss of just 3 wickets, all to the bowling of Dylan Wadsworth (3 for 20).

Julian Bradley on 39 and Vaughan Wilson with an unbeaten 58 were our undoing.

1^st game nerves…. Lets hope so !

Term 4 2013

Play will commence for most teams Saturday 19th October 2013

Prize Giving and AGM are on Thursday 21st November in the PAC foyer. Times to be posted at a later date.  We are seeking new committee members, so if you are able to give some time and energy towards the growing of cricket at Bethlehem College we would appreciate your efforts.

We will be running a sausage sizzle at the BC Gala this year, Friday 2 November. Come and support the club.

BC 1st XI Report - Saturday 23 March

Putting the disappointment of last weeks Gillette Cup knockout behind us, the Bethlehem College 1^st XI travelled down to Whakatane to take on the current Baywide title holders, Trident High School.

With BC being one of 4 teams sharing Term 1 top spot, this was going to be a crucial clash.

Winning the toss, we elected to bat, hoping to set a formidable total for Trident to chase.

Hopes were dashed however with a quick succession of wickets which saw us precariously poised at 67 for 8 off 24 overs … certainly not the plan!. With a wagging tail, Tom Rutherford (39) and Dylan Wadsworth (49 n.o) our innings ended on an unlikely 178 for 9 !. A credible total and the plan was back on track.

When Tridents opener was clean bowled in the first over, there was hope and when Wadsworth took his 2^nd wicket (2 for 16) in the 3^rd over the on field mood changed considerably.

Patrick Davenport took up the ball in the 8^th over and swinging the ball with apparent ease, snared a wicket in his first over and went on to a stunning 5 wickets for 5 runs off 6 overs (4 maidens incldg 3 wicket maidens)

The Trident middle order had been ripped apart, and with a couple of wickets to youngster Dan Price (2 for 12), Tridents innings ended with them on just 86.

With Aquinas losing to TBC 3rds Bethlehem were left sharing top of table spot with Otumoetai.

Having been runners up in the Baywide Term 4 2012 competition, BC had reasonable expectations for 2013.

Leading the bunch in the Baywide competition and moving through to last 20/20 hurdle of the Gillette Cup, it would be fair to say those expectations were met.

Bethlehem College drew St Johns College (Hamilton) in the first Northern Districts play off game on Monday. Winning the toss , BC put St Johns in to bat, and with a steady fall of wickets had them on the ropes at 85 after 17.3 overs. Luke Bryenton was our standout bowler with 3 for 17. With no standout individual batting performance we reached their total for the loss of just 6 wickets to go on to the final afternoon hurdle, the winner of the Waiuku College / Mahurangi College (Warkworth) game.

This turned out to be Mahurangi, and again winning the toss we elected to get them to set us a total to chase down.

Starting off ominously they reached 50 for just 2 off the first 10 overs and with this solid base to play from, a large total was threatening. The BC boys knuckled down though and with a brilliant last over  from Dylan Wadsworth (3 wickets ) and another 3 wicket haul to Dylan Ramohitaj we restricted them to 105 for 8 off the 20 overs.

The chase followed and with a splendid opening partnership of 36 off just 5 overs Mitchell Fairweather and Jack Preston looked like they would comfortably get us close.

In what could only be classed as a classic cricketing collapse though, when Mitchells wicket fell, so too did the following batsman. With unfortunate regularity !.

Mahurangi took out the game with BC reaching just 89 and instead of us, it was them progressing through to the 50 overs games later this week. Maybe next year !!
